CHILDREN OF THE GULF WAR

PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION

Courtesy of Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.

During Operation Desert Storm (17 January 1991 – 28 February 1991) anti-tank shells containing depleted uranium (DU) were used. This material is a chemical toxin and a source of dangerous radiation. Exploding shells contaminate the vicinity with uranium. After the war, alarming increases in the incidences of cancers and birth defects were noted in the Iraqi population – and also that of the children of Desert Storm soldiers. Japanese photojournalist Takashi Morizumi travelled throughout Iraq documenting the effects on the local population. Brisbane was one of the first cities, world-wide, where this exhibit was presented (12-27 February 2003).
